Tumukunde was cautioned against spreading falsehoods against President Yoweri Museveni

A group of veterans have warned presidential hopeful Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde over what they described as a violation of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Force code of conduct.

The group of about 100 veterans led by Capt. James Lukabwe made the remarks while speaking to journalists at G-One Hotel in Rubaga, Kampala.

“As retired soldiers, we are governed by the army code of conduct. We are not supposed to reveal vital information to the public about operations conducted during the guerrilla war. We were are disappointed to see Tumukunde breaching our code of conduct,” Lt. Ali Byakatonda, one of the veterans, said. 

He cautioned Tumukunde against spreading falsehoods against President Yoweri Museveni and making reckless comments regarding the National Resistance Army bush war. 

Byakatonda, who said he joined the NRA in 1982, referred to Tumukunde as indisciplined.  Lt Sam Nakabale, another veteran, said: “It is okay for you to join politics but stop undermining us and the commander-in-chief.  “You are a small fighter. Some of us are mightier than you,” Nakabale said.

Asked how Tumukunde violated the army code of conduct, Nakabale said commenting about the contribution of President Museveni and his role during the NRA war amounts to a violation of the army code of conduct.

On February 28, Tumukunde, wrote to the Electoral Commission chairperson seeking to carry out nationwide consultations about his intention to stand for president in the 2021 general elections.
